Apply for your NPI: Certified ATs & AT Students

What is an NPI number?

A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique 10-digit identification number used in standard health care transactions. The NPI fulfills a requirement of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). You only have to apply once, and the NPI number stays with you (like your BOC certification number or your state license number).

The NPI identifies you as a health care provider to other health care providers.

Why Do I Need an NPI number?

Your NPI number is the identifier that is used by numerous entities including employers, state licensing boards, regulatory agencies, insurers, CMS, and legislators. Having an NPI number is important because it allows ATs to be recognized using the same identifier by which other health care professionals are identified.

A few uses for the NPI include:

  1. NPIs may be used to identify health care providers in patient medical records
  2. Health care providers may use their own NPIs to identify themselves in nonstandard health care transactions and on related correspondence.
  3. Health care providers may use other health care providers NPIs to identify those other health care providers in health care transactions and on related correspondence.
  4. Health plans may use NPIs in their internal health care provider files to process transactions and in communications with health care providers.

These are the TAXONOMY CODES you’ll need:

Taxonomy codes categorize the type, classification, and/or specialization of health care providers.

  • The taxonomy code for an athletic trainer is 2255A2300X - SPECIALIST/TECHNOLOGIST - ATHLETIC TRAINER

As a student, you will enter two Taxonomy Codes to indicate you are a student of athletic training:

  • 390200000X Student in an Organized Health Care Education/Training Program
  • Upon graduation and the receipt your certification (and state license if available), simply log into your NPPES account and remove the 390200000X – Student taxonomy code and set your primary taxonomy code as 2255A2300X - SPECIALIST/TECHNOLOGIST - ATHLETIC TRAINER.

Once you have your NPI, don’t forget to update your BOC and NATA member profiles with your NPI number!
